A Local Church Grows its Membership 4x through Welcoming Refugees

WelcomeNST empowers and enables everyday Americans to respond to the refugee crisis around the world. Through Neighborhood Support Teams (NSTs) across our nation, we help resettle families who come to the United States to find refuge from crises in their home country. Each NST is made up of committed individuals from a shared city who come together to meet the needs of their sponsored refugee family. Although NSTs can be formed through a wide range of community connections, we have seen time and time again that churches are uniquely equipped and fit for this work.

Our organization and local churches of every faith have a shared mission to care for those most in need. For example, Christians are directed by the Bible to welcome the stranger, feed the hungry, clothe and house the destitute, and love their neighbor. When a community rallies around a refugee family, every one of these charges is fulfilled. An NST tangibly meets needs and surrounds people in love. Kasey Dillon, an NST leader and mentor, said, “This work solidified our vision and mission, giving us a way to engage with our community and do the hard work of the gospel.” Likewise, Emily James says that her faith is tied directly to her decision to start an NST in Nashville, TN. “In the name of Jesus, we’re coming together as a community to do something bigger. It’s a chance and it’s a choice. It’s what I think the church is called to do.”

Although the primary beneficiaries of resettlement are the refugee families who find safety and opportunity in their new communities, members of the NST and their local churches have experienced many positive impacts from engaging in this important work. On an individual level, Kasey says that church members who have joined the NST have learned “how to love like Jesus did, giving of ourselves and expecting nothing in return.” The personal growth that comes from stepping out of your comfort zone and into a calling of this nature is immeasurable. In addition, Kasey’s church has grown significantly because of their leadership and commitment to refugees, with people visiting and joining after first learning about their resettlement work.

“Forming an NST to resettle a refugee family is the most authentic way to show your community that your church is rooted in love and service. People in your community witness the true heart of the church.” There is no better way to let people know who you are than to show them. This work makes a church’s mission clear, without a single word needing to be said.

WelcomeNST would love to partner with your Church in this life-changing work. We have staff available to assist you every step of the way. If you want to learn more, please contact Kasey Dillon.
